"New York State officials on Wednesday unveiled a bill to protect young people from potential mental health risks by prohibiting minors from accessing algorithm-based social media feeds unless they have permission from their parents.

Gov. Kathy Hochul and Letitia James, the state attorney general, announced their support of new legislation to crack down on the often inscrutable algorithms, which they argue are used to keep young users on social media platforms for extended periods of time — sometimes to their detriment."

No different from what Utah is doing: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...lth-rcna119818

Other states such as Indiana and Arkansas have done the same thing: https://apnews.com/article/tiktok-la...7340d276f6ad86

So, this is something that has been brought up by politicians on both sides of the aisle.

This doesn't get into the lawsuit Tik Tok users have against the states of Texas and Montana for bans in those states: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-65677768

It's a good start. Shame on any parent that would actually give permission. I'd like to see protections go much further than this bill.

"The act would allow users under 18 and their parents to opt out of receiving feeds driven by algorithms designed to harness users’ personal data to keep them on the platforms for as long as possible. Those who opt out would receive chronological feeds instead, like in the early days of social media.

The bill would also allow users and parents who opt in to receiving algorithmically generated content feeds to block access to social media platforms between 12am and 6am or to limit the total number of hours per day a minor can spend on a platform."

Kids read less and less books. I know the struggle first hand. I mandate my kids to read 30 minutes a day. At their age I would read 400 page books back in the day but back then we didn’t have phones, iPads or YouTube.
You must stay on top of it.

Social media caused a lot of generational damage already.
