the Burgh........people are great, schools are great, housing is low, area is very safe and people look out for each other's kids, you can be in Burlington, Vt (concerts, shows, theaters, 7 colleges) in 45 minutes or Montreal in an hour/15 (take the superclean/safe Metro around the city for sports, huge concerts, festivals all summer with all kinds of restaurants, Chinatown, Greek area, Old Port on the St Lawrence Seaway) or Lake Placid (charming ski village/1980 Olympic site with lots of sites to see.....check out the ski jump site-----they even practice into a pool of water in the summer) in an hour or less. Lots of year round things to do and day care providers and school and medical people always have jobs. Nice place to be............
I grew up in Highland and it's really a great place to live. It's very safe, affordable for the Hudson Valley, and close to everything. Also the school district is excellent. In my opinion, the other places listed (i.e. Monticello, Liberty, and so on) are too remote. Highland is far closer to shopping, nightlife, and cultural activities. Good luck to you!
I am from S.C. and my boyfriend and I are looking to move up to NY. We are 24 and 27 and will be getting married in the next couple years and a couple years after probably start a family. We are looking for our next home to be in a safe, nice area that we can afford. I am a home child care provider as well so a family oriented area would be great. But we also are young, and enjoy going out on the town and shopping and such. I pulled some listings for NY and have found these citys to be in our price range but I want to make sure that they are places where I will feel safe as a young female and when I have a family I don't have to worry too much about something bad happening. Below is the list of towns I found, I'd love to get your input on each and any other places that would be nice for us. I also want to make a smart investment with the property and area I buy in.
Thank you so much for your time and I look forward to seeing what everyone has to say.
Unless it has changed radically, a great small town with access to 2 metropolitan areas, yet far enough away from typical "urban" problems might be Batavia, (exit 48 on the Thruway) and between Buffalo and Rochester. Small town; wonderful, affordable (except taxes), walkable safe neighborhoods, beautiful old houses, good schools, etc. You'd almost think you're someplace real as opposed to New York state. First house I bought there in '84 didn't even have a lock on the back door, loved it there, but the economy is kind of tight. One of the best Community Colleges in the country.
Depending on your price range Westchester County could offer you and family a wonderful place to live like
White Plains,Greenburgh,Elmford,Tarrytown,Courtlandt or Manor, Yorktown for start with good schools close to shopping and plenty of work for you.
thre previous poster, Archtopguitar, is quite right. The areas he mentioned are safe, affordable, have great education systems, are homes to state and/or private colleges/universities. There is abundant shopping, cultural amenities, state/county/local parks. And the infrastructure is much more modern and reliabe. There is very little employment opportunities available where you are considering and most residents commute to bigger cities to work. Also, medical care there will be quite basic, again forcing you to drive to larger communities for care. You will find an abundance of homes in your price range also.
The towns/villages you mentioned have little to recommend them, and I think you'd regret your decision if you decided to locate there.
There are much better alternatives than what you've discovered. Also, check out Ithaca, Dryden, Owego.
Good luck.
