Watch out for the Cairo, NY town council, and especially that Cairo Planning Board. They'll approve you if you are their best friend, but if you are new to the area, watch out! If you have darker skin, watch out! Have the lawyer show up without you! It is really too bad, as the town is so nice, and the folks here are mostly great, decent people, church-going folks who anyone would probably like. But this planning board gets out its torches and pitchforks too often, they think they know what's best for the world, when they are bumbling idiots with a town attorney who can't count or is secretly undermining them. So by all means move to Cairo, but start your business somewhere else!

It is quite sad really. My suggestion would be the same for this situation as anything else, GET INVOLVED!! If you want the political situation of this town to change, run for election to these positions in the town. Invite friends to help too. Change is only going to happen when enough people get on the ball to make it happen. I'm sick of it all too because Cairo as a whole is a great community.

I now live in a red state and it's just god awful! Yes, taxes are less, but the corruption is still there. Not to mention the literacy rate is terribly low. Education is not a priority. They're more worried about buying guns without sales tax than educating their children. The roads are crap here. We've had several cops shot and killed over the last 5 months and this is a very affluent town. The thugs come from neighboring towns. Lots of crime here with little in the way of law enforcement not to mention judges are VERY lenient. They supposedly feel sorry for the criminals. You're a freaking criminal....why should anyone be sorry for you when you chose to be a thug? Makes no sense. I certainly can't wait to move back to NY where people have brains and priorities.
