I viewed some photos of Ithaca...EXCELLENT walkable downtown!

Are there other cities like Itaca in NY? Is it unique? Or are many other cities in NY quite similar?

I have hardly been to every city in New York, but I have spent a lot of time in Ithaca, and I do believe it is fairly unique. You can find some of its traits in other New York towns, including nice walkable downtowns, but the overall feel is unique.

It has the beauty and rural features of the New York Fingerlakes, but also a cosmopolitan feel and culture largely attributable to the presence of Cornell University.

Most of the cities, large and small, in NYS are walkable like Ithaca is. After all they were established before the advent of cars when people traveled by foot. What you won't find elsewhere which isn't apparent from the pictures is the fact that Ithaca is very liberal and in that way quite unique in the state. That is what you won't find elsewhere.

As far as a downtown, maybe Saratoga Springs, Corning, and parts of some of the bigger Upstate cities too.

I agree with Saratoga Springs.

Oneonta also comes to mind, but it is half the size of Ithaca and doesn't have the lake and parks. Oneonta is also a little more blue collar than Ithaca, but it has a nice & walkable Main street.

I also agree that most cities in NY are very walkable, but the problem is that there are only empty store fronts to walk to and from. That is NYS's curse, so much potential - the buidings and infrastructure are there! - just no businesses.

Great pictures. There are so many nice downtowns and business districts in many NY State communities.
