..While down the valley a number of miles, my recent retirement was from a field that had 1st hand knowledge about crime in the area..inc. metro Bing. There are issues mentioned in some responses that are endemic to most of upstate NY. As for drugs/crime...consider this. I have 3 friends in the same line of work..one in rural Montana..one in western Kentucky...one in the "go to" state of N. Carolina..They run into ALL the issues I dealt with here..and in some ways, much more serious problems. And we are not saddled with the growing homeless issues in any way like southern and west coast cities have...
..and while a bit off topic...a friend of mine from my time in the military, sent me a vid to watch last month...He lives just east of L. A.. The vid shows an uninterrupted line of street people living along/both sides of a road..for over 3 miles..
Other than that, they are a decent place, but since its upstate their winters are brutal!!!!
I spent six years there. "Brutal?" that's overstating it. Of course, my first Christmas had -20F to greet me. . . and the car wouldn't start. I would ride my bicycle to work until around November - when my hands would freeze to the handlebars. I used to jog in "bitter cold" winter... in a skimpy running suit. After a minute or so, I warmed up. It was kind of nice to jog and not feel any sweat build up. On the other hand, no way would I jog in hot / humid Jawjuh. You. just. move. slower. when. it's. that. hot. and. humid.
