For several months I have been having a chirping noise in my 2011 Sentra that 7.....yes 7....shops, including the dealer, have not been able to track down. One thing that has never been mentioned by any of them is the CVT transmission. I have not heard of a chirp from these before, but I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with this symptom. The transmission shifts as perfectly as day one.

So I think the Sentra is one of the models that has received the infamous JATCO CVT. Even if that's so though, that doesn't mean that this noise is coming from the CVT, or reflects anything that needs attention.

I understand the desire to get to the bottom of an unusual noise - have you signed up at any model-specific online forums - a Nissan Sentra forum? There seem to be a few of them out there. I have joined such forums for a few cars I have owned and you can usually get more knowledgeable input there based on the community of owners' experience with the specific car make and model, versus a general automotive forum.

Thanks. Good idea.

Pretty easy to picture a CVT and one of the possibly dynamics that would cause a chirp.

I am going to guess a damaged/worn drive-belt and/or damaged/worn variable-gearing. The vehicle mileage would be key in narrowing it down.

Assuming you have ruled out the timing or serpentine belt-

A CVT requires fluid pressures up to 1,200 psi to operate and it must pass through small passageways, which may result in a momentary squeal sound. This noise does not affect transmission performance, function or reliability.

The vehicle has 135,000 miles on it....which lead me to wonder if it was the CVT.

I did change the serpentine belt. The car has a timing chain.

I also considered if maybe one of the pulley bearings was causing the noise.

It's definitely more than a momentary squeal sound. It can hold steady for a good period of time while accelerating or climbing an incline. It also can change pitch at times.

I've seen people use a stethescope to try and localize the sound.

As a diagnostic, you may want to throw-in a heavy-duty friction-modifier that is
specifically designed for CVTs.

It may help, and if the noise quiets-down, you have most likely determined that
the chirp is indeed coming from the transmission.

Do you have any experience with LUBEGARD®?
