... to get away from the competitive, want the best you can get, want the hottest piece of meat for a mate, want the biggest house, most expensive car, most fun/exciting friends, and the coolest, highest paying job?
Like seriously, I've had it up to here with society and life.
Who knows of an alternate country/place/religion/commune where I can get away from this shallow/materialistic world (and still be able to watch the NY Jets play on Sundays)?
I know just what you mean, jobaba. It can be discouraging too.
Usually I shy away from people like ones you listed. I am completely happy driving my 10 yr-old car, in my not-new home etc. Materialism
If you find that place, etc. let me know, as I have considered the same... Right now the only way for me to get away is to stay home! Or hike in the woods or walk on the beach...spend time with my cats.

Wanting to escape the superficial, the stagnant and just leave the rat race behind and find a serene paradise? I think nearly everyone has thought about this. The only way may be to become completely self-sufficiant, growing own food, raising cattle and gong back to basics someplace where this is viable. it's probably easier said then done though. best bet: Enjoy your free time to the fullest if this is not viable, And work toward a close alternative or something new and different.
Haha. Thanks for the responses. I was venting a little when I wrote this, but this world definitely frustrates me, and I'm in a particularly frustrating phase of my life.
Stop reading the media/advertising, start associating with those you feel most comfortable with, start doing things for others that have less. Life becomes more of a blessing.
Surround yourself with people that make you happy to be with them, not the opposite. Life is too short to have other people making you miserable all the time. The older I got, the more I realized just how toxic some people can be. I began weeding out the people in my life that made me unhappy.
