I wonder if it is common with other people that you only see some relatives only on Christmas.

We live only five miles away but the only time we see them is on Christmas Day. We get together with them for about 3 hours of forced small talk and then someone comes up with an excuse why we have to leave and then that's it, we won't see each other again for a year.

Of course this is after spending $100s of dollars on gifts for each other.

My husband and I have these relatives too. We don't do presents, though.

I bet those relatives would be happy to stop the gift giving...just start a conversation!

We have those relatives too, and I'm okay with it. The ones I have no relationship with either have nothing in common with me or they make poor life choices that I choose not to be a part of.

Sometimes "not" seeing relatives is the best Christmas gift of all.

We do presents only between my parents and us. Not with every one but we do give them chocolates. Since me and my brother live here in EU every thing changed my parents start coming here for the thanks giving and they stay till January so we are little family celebrating some times we do visit other relatives who live in EU but we prefer not to do that more oftern during the December. we prefer during summer.

I don't feel that way. But then again, all of mine are gone.

I have relatives who I lived less than a half hour from my whole life and never got to know them. I only see them at Christmas and funerals. We just don't have much in common.

We have close by relatives we only see at Christmas, they only live 30 minutes away but we are not into the same kinds of activities, we like doing things outdoors and they prefer running the bars.

How would we tell them that we are not going to give them any gifts without a major blow up?
