In my family, the youngest generation are now in their twenties and only two have kids. It's cliquey with all sorts of petty drama. The old patriarch will give political lectures. Same stories, same rants, same problems. It's tedious. These people can be OK in small groups, but together....

The healthiest thing I did was move to another hemisphere.

I'm in a limbo. Being "alone" on a holiday counts in my mind as "failing at life". However, those tedious get-togethers don't qualify as "living".

I don't mind but I need my quiet time so that requires our RV for a multiple day event. A one day/night thing? Absolutely.

I absolutely do.
TV stays off and we chat, eat, do board games and card games, etc...
It's all good.

I fail to see what being black has to do with it, though!
Black families are typically more tighter knit when it comes to extended family. So one who is black and not close to their family is seen as weird.

I'm black myself and not close to extended family at all. So I usually don't have to worry about lame family get-togethers.

I moved to California for college and never left. I have no family here! Sounds good, right? The bad part is, everyone wants to come and visit and they want to stay with me. Eat my food, stay up until all hours of the night. They want to go to Disney Land, Magic Mountain, the Beach, Hollywood, the Zoo in San Diego, SeaWorld and Lego Land. Drive, drive, drive. I have been to these places more times than I can count. I do not want to go there anymore. I don't want to shuttle family all around the state. I am just tired. This year, I am not having anyone over for the 4rth. If you live in So Cal, this weekend in the one from hell. It is going to be very hot. Traffic that you cannot begin to imagine. No parking anywhere you go.

So, to answer your question: No! I do not like to spend the holidays with my family. Your family sounds ideal. Have some food, watch a crappy movie and say good-bye! Want to trade?
Can't you just tell your family to get a hotel? My mom knows when she comes to visit me, my place is off limits, mainly because it is too small and my food budget is minimal.
