The passive aggressive conflict, arrogance and ego that the successful lawyer Chris brought to the family events in the last few years is far worse than anything than anything that is said verbally. I wish you could see the guy and observe how arrogant and haughty he is. He is magical at his ability to insult everyone without saying a word. Don't you know most true communication conflict is non verbal.
Jerry, the slightly drunk relative did everyone a favor. Chris's wife did not leave the Christmas event with her husband, she laughed at his petty ego and told everyone he deserved a talking to.

Hopefully Chris and his wife found a wonderful restaurant where they could enjoy a fabulous meal away from Jerry and the rest of the family ya-hoos.

First of all, only you can make yourself feel inferior, not someone else.
Secondly, its not polite to talk about religion or politics at a social gathering.
Third, that is no way to talk to a guest.
Fourth, I suspect you won't need to be subjected to his company after this year.
If this story is real, which I am starting to sense its not, it seems like Chris was doomed from the start for being handsome, educated and successful. And when I say start, I mean marrying into the family. Well, at least it seems like a divorce isn't too far off in the future. So long free law advice!
Are there other posters who are stuck with ya-hoos relatives? Are there other Jerry's acting like bozos at family dinners?
They have my sympathy.
My brother in law could get pretty damn obnoxious but usually his brother or parents will tell him to shut up before he starts bouncing off walls. Good old boy Jerry though, he seems to come from a place where no one corrected his behavior. Which is a shame since he is probably old enough to have lived during the era when you smacked your kid with a belt when they tried to mouth-off.
That wasn't the way to put someone in their place for being a snob. Instead of asking him about Trump, they should have confronted him directly for his arrogant and snobby behavior. Bringing up politics at a family event when there is alcohol involved and when you aren't certain of the other people's views is a terrible idea.
So the aloof snob who acts like he is better than everyone else is the winner in your eyes?
Chris is not an aloof snob. He is a well-mannered man who knows that it is impolite to try to start debates at a holiday family gathering. Jerry, on the other hand, is a jackass, and the rest of the family is a jackass fan club.
