My SO and I like going to a lot of live performances and shows, but neither of us like clapping for 10 minutes straight (carpal tunnel) when the entire cast comes out to bow one by one. So I know this sounds really bad and millennial-ish, but I downloaded a sound file on my phone of one person clapping and so did he, so whenever the occasion calls for it, we both just play that track on continuous loop and turn the volume up.
Have any of you heard applause when a plane lands? My mother, who did a lot of international travel since the 60s, says the passengers used to clap every time their plane landed, but today I don't hear any...I might hear a smattering of applause if anything.
I have, sometimes when I travel to Spain. I think it's hillarious.
They also play music when the plane lands. Too funny.

This was true in the 80's when I first started flying and became less popular in the 90's. I never understood it. I don't applaud when the bus gets me there, or when the train arrives. Why flying only?
The one applause that annoys me is at musicals. After every single song. Even after the next song has begun. Don't get me started on the dreadful standing ovation.
I see the opposite. Standing ovations for EVERYTHING. I stay seated and clap appreciatively but I rarely stand. Somebody has to really do something that knocks me out, for me to give a standing ovation. Everybody who stands kind of looks at me like I'm weird, but standing ovations are for that rare, something-special kind of performance.
I've noticed over the last few years, people don't seem to applaud a lot anymore. I am wondering if other people have noticed the same thing.
Examples:
I joined a church (we ended up leaving). I know some churches are energetic but this one wasn't. People didn't ever seem to know when to clap. A woman would get up and sing the heck out of a song and would get barely an applause. I was horrified.
It's inappropriate to applaud in church, so that's not a good example.
I went to 2 graduations and people didn't bother to applaud unless they knew the person. My husband noted this was weird because you SHOULD come away with sore hands from a graduation...but not any more.
I went to a school night thing and each kid in class did a presentation. The teachers had to encourage people to clap for every single student.
At these kinds of things, we are encouraged NOT to applaud until the very end.

I think it's about where you're going.
We always applaud and carry on when we land at McCarran International (Las Vegas).
Back in the '60's international flights were still a big deal...now most H.S. seniors go to Cancun for spring break! But seriously, unless it's like an obvious party destination where everyone is drinking, no applause. Maybe if it's been a turbulent flight and everyone's just glad to be alive?
I've seen that before, and I was one of the ones clapping wildly. When you think you're going to die, and then you finally feel those wheels hit the runway, it's applause worthy.
Being Catholic, no one applauds during church baring something exceptional, perhaps a professional orchestra being used, and that is usually done if the priest acknowledges them. At the end of weddings or communions you get will get an applause, but again, unique circumstances (its not an everyday mass).
As for plane rides, I have literally only seen the applause during flights to Latin American counties. Traveling to Europe or Asia, never.
