I used to have a bunch of pen pals. Before the email age, I thought up the idea of trying to get a pen pal from each state and each Canadian Province. Found a book at the library that listed every newspaper in the US and Canada. So every couple weeks I'd write a letter to the editor to a couple different papers looking for pen pals. Had a better response from Canada than the US. Kept in touch with several of them for about 20-25 years.
I had a few when I was a kid/teen...many years ago! I remember having one who lived in the UK and one who lived in Australia; I don't remember how we found each other.
While on the subject of pen pals, here's a site for you to look at for a lark.
No, I haven't written to any of these guys. I just wanted to look at the photos and read the profiles because I am nosy.
One I remember well was in the military. You know, write to them to keep them company. Back in the 1990s. Seemed like a nice guy...then he started sending pics and talking about meeting up. I was like, "Forget that."
Then had some foreign ones. Then there were the people I made friends with on trips and when we went home, the only way to stay in touch would be to write each other (80s and 90s).
I had a few when I was a teen. I remember we would make these little things called "Friendship books", where you'd write down your name and address, and pass it on to someone else. The idea being that when the book was full, to send it back to the first person who'd written in it. (don't think I ever got any of mine back, though)
I accidentally had one in China for a couple of years, but I couldn't get her to write beyond empty pleasantries, so I gave up.
You think thats bad, I use to write a blind guy... he would never read my letters
