Say you knew someone, a friend or close acquaintance. He works steady, pays his bills, shows responsibility.
Say this person one time - and one time only - falls on a hard time. He pays his rent, bills, etc. but due to a circumstance, has no money left for food and/or other small expenses. You discover this somehow, but when you bring it up, he laughs it off and abruptly changes the subject. Only says "I'm good, I'm good!" but you can see that he's struggling.

He doesn't want to, but you know he needs help. Have you ever been in such situation?

Does he have a birthday coming up? Get him a $100 prepaid that can be used anywhere.

I don't know about birthday. And Christmas is too far away.

Yes. I put a $100 bill in her purse with a post-it note that said, "I know you need it, and I have it to give."

Then just give him the cash. Don't make a big deal about it.

Yes and I gave $100 and said I don't even want to hear any argument. Everyone needs help sometimes. Bye! (neighbors, so I could do that and just run off)

In my opinion, I don't think he's being arrogant. I think he is probably in a situation where simply no one can help him out, and he can only help himself. Is more of an independence perspective of life. That's what I think happens here.

Someone sent my friend a $100 gift card to local grocery store and it was greatly appreciated.

I don't think arrogance is an issue. You may see he's struggling, trying to keep it together...but he's coming up short. He's making concerted effort, but just not succeeding. It's a one time in which he's not doing so well.
But pride is keeping him from breaking down.

If you can, why not mail a pre-loaded visa credit card anonymously. That way he can use it for anything he needs.
