Without looking at the other replies, I know that I would say to whoever was first in the line, "Here's an empty stall," and then I'd go back to where I had been. That's only fair.

I do wonder if in other areas of your life, you also feel that you are the only competent person and others are constantly letting you down...

if I was You I’d be more worried about why I was getting so angry over something so trivial.

I agree with those who say, give it to next in line. Personally I always check for feet under the doors, while I am in line, if I see an empty one I check it & call the next in line.

What really irritates me, if I am in a place, where there is only one stall, with a locked door, & someone comes in behind me, while I am in the hall, & ask, is anyone in there, My normal response is Yes, that is why I am waiting here.

You sound very angry and were very rude. I'd try to look at myself and figure out why I'm so angry.

Yep. And if OP had waited in line like everyone else, she probably would've gotten the word...like everyone else.

I actually SAW someone in New Orleans once, doing this exact thing. Being bossy and telling women which stall to go to, like she was some kind of traffic director.

Not only did you cut in front of her, you cut in front of the ladies waiting behind her who also may not have realized there was an empty stall.

^^ This.

I'd yell at you if you just skip the line. I hate line skippers.

Bathroom designers could eliminate a lot of this problem by designing doors that defaulted to opening on a spring, and would stay closed only when latched. That way, you'd know right away which stalls were in use and which ones were vacant.

And while I'm on the subject, would it kill the designers to give a little bit more space between the inward-opening door and the toilet bowl? There are times I've had to practically straddle the toilet just to get the door closed.

Or they could use those latches that show "occupied" or "vacant" on the outside of the door.

I was recently at an airport (PHX, maybe?) that had these--green if vacant, red if latched/occupied. It was so helpful. I have other opinions about airport restroom design, but that was super nice.
