So I decided that I need a mani-pedi and it would be great if someone came to pick me up and took me to my favorite salon and paid for the whole thing!
A gift I might appreciate at any given time will vary. IMO, a well received gift demonstrates that the giver has been paying attention to what's going on in the recipient's life at the time. For example: if the recipient has been decorating a house they just moved in to, maybe a gift card to a home improvement store. A gardener might love a new shrub. Someone who just got a new dog might appreciate new toys or gourmet treats. I try to give thoughtful gifts and actually enjoy finding just the right thing to surprise someone with. Every time I get a hint during a conversation I mentally file it away until I can get home and scribble a note for the future. If I see something in a catalog perfect for someone the page gets torn out and filed away for an upcoming birthday, Christmas, or (if I can't wait) no occasion at all. If we happen to be window shopping together maybe a gift certificate to a store they liked. I don't shower everyone with gifts and most of them are pretty modest. The few are chosen carefully because I value the person and show interest in their life.
Sometimes my ex-husband's family would put lottery tickets in birthday and Christmas cards. I would like that again, only with a ticket that actually won a jackpot.

A gift of their friendship, offer to help if I need something, a plate of a home-cooked meal that they had made, and offer to treat me to a lunch or dinner.
