Whu wouldn't he? You'd already given him hundreds if not thousands of dollars of valuable lumber and other items. Why would they assume you'd have a different attitude about a relatively low-value table?

Still not enough info here and unanswered is: what did the OP say when the person expressed interest in the table?

What did they say to make you come to the conclusion that they expected it for free?

What did they say to demonstrate that stuff you've already given to them was expected for free?

Was the table the only item that you sold and if it was, did it have a significantly higher value than the rest of the items. If the friend was helping you out with the heavy lifting and packing, that's worth quite a bit in hours (and muscles) worked.

We've moved several times and I've never sold anything that we weren't taking with us. Everything was donated or given away. It made things easier for us and no hard feelings amongst friends. We've been in good financial shape whenever we moved and I know that's a big factor that could sway someone to sell - one that we fortunately didn't have to deal with.

I've always felt that friends or neighbors who wanted some of our stuff before we moved were helping us out. We got to move fewer items and they received something they needed or wanted.
