I know there are many posts from people wanting to relocate and I hate to add to the monotony, however I have NO idea what area we should consider. I am researching several areas because we want to take our time and find the RIGHT place to settle. We have looked into South Carolina however a few things disturb me around the state, so I am looking into North Carolina with hopes of finding "our paradise"
We are a family that includes 3 school age children (1 elementary, 1 middle and one high school starting next year) and a couple dogs. Jobs are not a big issue for us since I work from home and our finances are good. We enjoy everything outdoors, hubby and kids love fishing and being out on the boat as well. We need to be in an area that is very family friendly with plenty of kids, oportunities for activities, good schools to continue the kids good record thus far, would love an area that has "holistic" oportunities fairly close (if possible), and obviously safe.
Where we live the gang issues and crime are just rediculous, so we are looking to settle someplace better. We are not the type of people to jump around from place to place...we left that life with the retirement of the military
I don't mind being near the mountains, centrally located or the coast...we just don't want to be in an area that is typical to much snow, or hurricanes. I know this is asking a lot, however this is a very important move for our family and I want to take our time to find the perfect spot, even if it is not here in North Carolina.
We would love opinions from anyone suggesting areas that may fit our needs/wants. Thanks from a grateful family!
How about north of Charlotte around Huntersville? You didn't mention a price range but there's plenty of water in Lake Norman to enjoy the fishing/boating. You'd be close enough to the mountains for winter stuff, Charlotte for city life, schools are good, far enough from the coast for hurricanes. Don't have a clue about holistic things.

Good luck!
We are planning on building our dream house so once we find a possible area, we will dig into neighborhoods and such. First things first...finding an area to investigate.lol
Jobs are a definate! We couldn't even consider a move without them...we are one of the lucky ones I guess
Oh, yes. Many, many posters come to these board saying basically "I looooove NC. I've never been there but it sounds so cool! I have no job skills or education but where would be a good place for me? I just love the beach!"
It is truly amazing. I assume they're watching a lot of One Tree Hill or reading Nicholas Sparks' books.
Anyway, good luck. Sounds like the Charlotte area might work for you. You may want to look at the Greensboro/Jamestown area. It's a nice family-oriented area and the schools there are good. There are a couple of lakes there, too.

^ Invisible Rep point, since I can't give you real ones!
RE: "Mom of Angels" <!?>- Hurricanes aren't a significant danger except in the coastal part of NC. We do get one inland every few decades (Raleigh was last hit in 1996 and mid-Eastern NC in 1999) but not to the degree that it would be a deal-breaker anywhere except within about 50 miles of the coast. Most of the time, by the time a hurricane moves inland, it's downgraded to just a bad storm. We get far more ill effects from the ice storms that hit in the winter, knocking down trees (lots of pine trees in NC, which love to collect ice in their needles) and power lines.
We do get snow in NC, especially the mountains, but most of our snowfalls are 6inches or less and don't hang around long--this past winter having been an exception in that regard, for a lot of places. Climate in NC varies GREATLY since you have both mountains and coast, so you'd need to narrow down a little more to ask about specifics. The Lake Norman suggestion sounds pretty reasonable to me, though.
We are looking into Salisbury...so far looks pretty good.
Hey, we have some friends in Salisbury and have visited there a few times. It is a darling little city with a very active historic preservation group. High Rock Lake is not too far either. But, you better check the schools carefully. There was another thread on here that had a long post about the Rowan County schools. They are apparently pertty mixed.
Also, forgot to add this: thank you for your military service!
Francois, I have also tried to give you rep points and been rejected! Great minds think alike .
