We have moved to Alexander County from NJ. My DD has a IEP and I have a few questions regarding NC laws and IEPs. The school has been great but I need to clarify some items. Where can I get IEP Help?

Contact your local ARC and/or United Way. They should have someone who can even sit in on the meeting with you to ensure the school is handling the situation legally.
We also moved from NJ but we're in Union County. And I've done the IEP thing more times than I care to recall.
Hi Saralee how is Union County for HS level special needs?
I wish I could answer that but no personal experience and I really haven't heard any stories. My boy is in Middle School and they have treated us fairly but I'm also pretty assertive and already very well-versed on what he's entitled to. Not one to back down easily.
So, again, good experiences with Union County's Exceptional Children Dept but I can't speak on HS specifically.
The other good thing UC has going for it is ARC's Melinda Plue. She will sit in any IEP meeting with you and advocate. All stories I hear say the woman is good. She will also connect you to other invaluable resoruces (she has done that for us).

Are you happy with the schools so far? We are moving to NC next summer. I will be visiting 2 schools this fall to pin down a location to move. I also have a
child with an IEP in an autistic self-contained classroom, can you offer any advice with the process of picking a place, research etc,?
I have narrowed down my choices to the Hickory and Tryon areas. Any info would be appreciated.

Special Education in NC is different then NJ special education. I was very upset when I enrolled my LD child with a NJ IEP in the NC school system. Actually, The whole schooling is more lax here then NJ. I also have a 5th grader with no learning problem at all, and If we were in NJ she would have already done 2 major book report assignments, here she has done none.
You would think that since the schools are federal they would be comparable to other states. I notice Big difference between the 2.
This of course is just my opinion so far.
It seems if you pay for private school here then they are comparable to what NJ schools do for free. Yes, I am disappointed with the schools here. Maybe we just need more time, but, again this is just my observations so far. Other then that NC is beautiful and peaceful.

I am sorry that you have had that experience with the NC schools. We had the opposite . My DS, in 7th grade, has school work here that is more challenging that what his friends back in NJ are doing. My DD, in 9th grade, has found the work here to be much more challenging than what her friends are doing back in NJ as well. Schools is the main reason that we relocated from NJ. We were paying over $12,000 in property taxes and the schools were not doing a great job at all. My DD, who has the IEP just got her report card and got all A's and B's. We have worked out the IEP situation and all is well here
