I'm sure this question has been asked...
My wife and I both live in Florida. We are moving to NC soon. We both have guns... and gun permits issued thru the state of Florida. How will that work when we move?
Thanks for your time

When you say "gun permit," do you mean a "concealed carry permit" or a "purchase permit" to purchase a gun?

You'll need to get a new concealed carry permit once you move out-of-state. In fact, some states require you to update them even if you move within a state.

Purchase permits are typically only good in the state they were issued in.

And concealed carry permits are issued by the sheriff's office of the county where you live in North Carolina.

If you have a Florida Resident Concealed Carry Permit, you can change the status to a Non-Resident permit and it will be honored in NC. That being said, with a non-resident permit you would still have to purchase a Gun Permit from your county if you wanted to buy a handgun. Also an out of state permit also does not cover you for the federal Gun Free Safety Zone Act law. A North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit would allow you to purchase a handgun without additional permits and protects you from the GFSZA.

In the State of NC, it is not called a "gun permit"' it is called a "permit to purchase".

If you are moving to Mecklenburg County, call the sheriff's office and make an appointment to complete your information for your permits to purchase.

Based on the OP, it seems like "gun permit" has to do with right to carry, not purchase.

A concealed carry permit is called just that, or often referred to as CCW.

Maybe it's different in FL. I've just never heard anyone say "I have a permit to buy a gun" when in a discussion about gun ownership.

I have a gun permit meaning I'm allowed to carry a concealed weapon. In the state of Florida there is no "permit for purchase" . Take a safety course (can be taken at gun shows). And have a back ground check done. That's pretty much it to get a carry permit, other than money for fees.

Do hand guns have to be registered thru the state of NC?
