I've been reading many posts this a.m. and no matter what the original thread is, it seems a lot of people invariably end up complaining that people aren't friendly: that Southerners resent "Yankees", that "Yankees" make fun of their southern cousins, and so on. Well, you know what? People are People wherever you go. Nice and not so nice. Ignore the ignorant and celebrate the positive.
My daughter is a Lexington, SC transplant. Visiting her last year, I came up with 2 super examples of my theory. My hubby was sitting on her front porch; our car with its PA license plate was clearly visible to those walking by. A man walking his dog, looked over at him and said, "Another damn Yankee, huh?" and kept on going. My hubby just said, "Yup!" and kept smiling.
The same day our dog got sick very quickly and we needed a vet asap. We were in the outskirts of Columbia and, desperate for help, we stopped at an Eckerd's drug store. I ran in and asked the clerk if she could give us directions to the nearest vet. A customer took over, drew a map, and then said, "You know what? Just follow me; it's not far." Well, it was 5 miles away and that sweetheart took us right to the door of her vet! Is that going above and beyond?
Same area, different attitudes. Just paste on a smile when they're nasty and tell them that you hope their day improves. They'll get the message, and you'll feel superior, no matter if you are a Yankee or a Southerner.
