Hey guys,
I'm an 18 year old currently living in Manchester, England and I really want to move abroad to either Canada or the US (NYC or North Carolina preferably).
I plan to move after I have completed my university course over here (studying to be a teacher) but I have a few questions that I need answers to before I make my decision:

1. What is the healthcare like in America? I desperately need to know this because I have type 1 diabetes

2. How affordable is the housing? This also is a must know because I don't really have that much money available to me

3. Are there many schools around and would I be able to get a job in one if I moved?

Any help you could give would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Ok, you mention NYC, which is fine it is a city, however you mention North Carolina, which is a state and very broad for us to give recommendations. . Is there city your interested in this state?

You mention affordable, How much are you willing to spend?,
Are you wanting to rent an apartment, condo or house?
There is plenty of colleges in this state depending on what kind of college your looking into.
Community college, technical college or University?
There is plenty of hospitals for diabetic treatment.

I haven't really decided as of yet which city in North Carolina I would prefer, I'm going to do a bit more research into that, any suggestions would be very helpful.

I need an area with low cost property as I don't really have that much in savings as of yet but my main concern is the hospitals and healthcare available. As I mentioned earlier I will do some more digging to find out which area would be most suitable.

Thanks in advance.

Look into Winston Salem it is a mid size city with two very good hospitals.
Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. and Forsyth Medical Center.

Cost of living maybe in your price range.

You are aware that we don't have public health care like the UK. You would probably have to buy a private health insurance policy unless find an employer who provides you with coverage. Teaching jobs generally provide health care coverage. Otherwise, you would pay full cost out-of-pocket. A first time doctor visit might cost $250, and an established patient might cost $125. The quality of health care is very good, but it is costly.

If I were you I would look into Canada seriously.

While you will likely benefit from your university studies in England, those studies will not qualify you for a teaching job in the United States. During times when there is a lack of teachers, exceptions are made, but that is not the case now.
You might find useful information on Professional Educator's Licensure. If you are sure you want to teach in the U.S., attending university here might be a better route. Visit the Legal Immigration Forum, too - you'll need information about that. //www.city-data.com/forum/legal-immigration/

Health care in the United States is changing. It's hard to say what things will be like in 4-5 years.

Housing costs less in NC than in some other states, but housing costs don't mean much unless you compare them with your salary. Those who work in NC can generally afford to live in NC.

For what the US Healthcare sustem is like, you'd need to check a US-centered board, not NC. The Health and Wellness forum might be a good place.

As for schools, you'd need to give a specific area of the state. NC is quite a large state and verry diverse, so there is no "one size fits all "answer". We can't answer whether "you could get a job at one", as that will depend onyour subject matter, certifications, and experience, in addition to the local (to the particular district) hiring situation. You haven't said what age group or subject you're looking to teach.

I suggest a visit to NC before seriously considering moving here, as you seem to think the state is much smaller and more homogeneous than it is.

I don't want to sound mean, but I think you need to do some more research about possible Visas to the US before you start looking at specific areas to move.

You will need a company/school to sponsor your work visa (H1B Visa) unless you have some special circumstances like a relative who can sponsor you. Those visas are not easy to come by, so your chances are not great.

My husband is a Brit, so I am extremely familiar with the US Immigration system. I am not trying to crush your dreams, but am just trying to give you a heads up on things you need to look at.

As one of the other posters suggested, perhaps Canada would be a better fit for you. You will not run into the Visa restrictions there that you would here.

This website is extremely useful in helping people navigate the US Immigration experience. Have a read through and get a better idea of what you are in for.

Good luck in whatever path you choose.
