food lion sucks. they leave up their sale prices for weeks after the sale and don't put dates on the sale price. every time i go there i get charged more for something i thought was on "sale". every time...at almost every food lion :/. i refuse to go there now
Despite it being a local NC company, and every job lost representing a family. It's kind of hard for me to not think the company's woes are well deserved. They used aggressive tactics, like opening up stores directly across from competition (like Winn-Dixie) and undercutting them out of business. Then Wal-Mart came around and started doing the same thing to them.
Same thing that makes it hard for me to feel sorry for Blockbuster. They did the same thing to shut down mom and pop video stores. Too bad it seems like Walmart wille ventually shut down everybody, as far as brick and mortar goes.

Piggly Wiggly caters to a certain demo (actually a couple of demos) and strategiclly place their stores to cater to them. The people that shop there love it. Not judging, but it is, what it is. I sometimes go there just to people watch.
^ that is not true. Piggly Wiggly does not "place" stores anywhere. It's an association (of sorts) of independent grocers who group together for name recognition and buying power. Sort of like IGA. Stores like that are rural by default because they serve areas that chains aren't likely to locate.
AFAIK Piggly Wiggly does buy up existing smaller regional chains. The one where I live, which has gone through about five different names/owners in 20 years, is pretty much the same store with the same people working there.
