Am I imagining things or did there used to be an Ikea in North Carolina?

Yes, Ikea plans to have a store in Charlotte. It is still in the early planning.

You can see the signs for the new ikea store from 77 and looks like the land is mostly cleared. It was dark and hard to see last night but I did see the signs for it!!

Not a big loss... IKEA sells mostly cheap particle board furniture. Go to High Point and get yourself some good quality furniture instead!

Agree, Ikea is nothing special. My sister used to buy it all the time and when I helped her move, half of her Ikea furniture literally feel apart. Some people like the looks of it, and it's cheaper than High Point furniture, but in reality, it's flimsy crap. Mostly good for dorm rooms, or for young people that need to furnish a small apartment on a budget.

I love how people slam Ikea furniture and say "Go to High Point!" I guess they never were at a point in their lives where they were just starting out professionally and had to furnish an apartment after moving out of mommy and daddy's house, but didn't have thousands of dollars to blow in High Point. Those of us who have been in this situation aren't always satisfied with second-hand, scratched and stained junk, and would much rather have new, clean and nice-looking "junk" until we can afford "real" furniture.

I have owned an inexpensive sofa from Ikea for four years and it still looks and feels like new. It has a solid wood frame and is a simple design that fits in with different styles of decor. I can even wash the cushion covers if they become soiled and to cut down on allergens, which is a plus IMO. It is by far some of the best money I've spent.

I'm glad to hear that Charlotte will be getting an Ikea in the near future. I think the Triangle area is a more logical market, though, due to the concentration of colleges, universities and young professionals in the area. Hopefully we'll get one sometime in the future as well.

I believe that Ikea is opening in the University area and construction should begin this winter.
