Norplant is not available in the United States. There are pills, patches, rings, IUDs, and I'm sure many other options you could discuss with your doctor about the side effects and what is best for your situation.

Sexual Health: Your Guide to Birth Control: Norplant

Anything that was voluntarily removed from the market I would be very hesitant to use.

Don't know about the OP, but I'm pretty sure I couldn't talk my husband into that one...not that I would want to.

Though often approached from a religious standpoint, Natural Family Planning can be approached from a secular standpoint as well. And no, it is not the rhythm method . Many women chart their fertility using the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility". My husband and I use the Creighton model, which actually has a higher success rate of avoiding pregnancy than birth control. Also, no crazy side effects! There are tons of instructors in the states who can teach various methods. Just a thought!

OP, if you are looking for long-term contraception that you can forget about, you will probably want to get the Mirena IUD. Quick to insert in the doctor's office, lasts 5 years, easy to remove if desired. It's pretty popular and safe and effective. I have several OB-Gyn friends who swear by it, both as doctors recommending it to patients and using it themselves. Insurance should cover it. You'll just need to establish with an OB-Gyn once you get here.

You could try Implanon, which is similar to Norplant. And to the person who says to avoid intercourse, I hope you were kidding.

IMPLANON - Birth control that goes under the skin of your arm.
