Hi,

We are looking at moving there by the end of March. We keep hearing negative stuff about Goldsboro itself . I was raised in the Ft. Bragg/Fay area and don't want to live there . What is a good area around SJ for families . I have a soon to be 6th grader and Kindergartener. We don't mind living 30 to 45 mins driving time from the base. Any help would be so appreciated We are looking at buying a house and want to get a feel for the area around there.

More smileys, please.

Seriously though, there is not much out that way. There are decent parts of Goldsboro. Maybe look at Mt. Olive.

Also, am I the only one that has always found the name of that AFB amusing? Ha.

Now, that is how dense I am... my son was stationed there and until you made that comment that never even occurred to me! I must be getting old. It sounds like one of the names tossed around in the closing credits of "Car Talk", if you ever listen to that on NPR.

Haha, yep! I feel like a dumb kid laughing at that name, but I can't help it!

Okay, enough of us chuckling over the name. That isn't addressing the poster's concerns.
I had only been there once, and my son lived off-base in the downtown area which is not a suitable area for children. I would suggest asking someone stationed at the base if there is a family services person who might offer you some advice as to where to live. You might also get info from the Wayne County school system and find out which schools are the best and then look in those districts. Good luck.

I grew up in that area. La Grange isn't that far away and it a small town. there are homes in the country (I wouldn't live in town) and you would only be 20-25 minutes from the base. I went to those schools and my nephew attends them now and from what I know, they're good schools.

If you want to stay in Wayne county, the Rosewood area is very nice. It's west of the base on HWY 70. Again you'd be 20-25 minutes from the base. It's a small community with small but good schools (I have relatives that atttend and teach at these schools) they have a Walmart opening next week. The area along the highway is growing so you wouldn't have to "go to town" for things you do now.

Belfast is an area where a lot of military folks live. Dudley is one area I would avoid completely.

I really don't know what you're hearing about Goldsboro that is bad, I don't really see that it's that bad. My DH was stationed at SJ (we're not at Pope, not too far away) and I have a cousin stationed there now. If you have any questions, I'll try to help.

We just moved to the Goldsboro area, so I don't know how much help I can be, but so far so good! We live north of the city in a nice, quiet neighborhood, but still have the Goldsboro mailing address. There are a ton of new developments around here with lots of kids. From our area, the base would be about 15 minutes or so. There are definitely nice neighborhoods around here - maybe you could check with a local realtor about the kind of area you are looking for.

I wish you the best of luck with your move. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Why do they call it "Shady J"?

I'm told the Shady J was the emblem they use to paint on the nose of the planes (old-style "nose art").
