I just saw a list of 5 Best and 5 Worst states to educate your kids somewhere online and was just curious if anyone knows where NC ranks?

Depends on what you are talking about and where.

NC has some of the worst schools in the country....and it also has some of the best.

NC has always been a high value state in terms of higher education...its largest public Universities are diverse and affordable....but it also has some colleges that are not the best.

NC has a recognized community college system led by the colleges in the Top 10 cities...but some of its rural comm colleges seem to be dying out.

So it fluctuates in NC, it can be really good or really bad, depending on where you live and where you go to school.

Here's the actual link from Education Week: Education Week: States Show Spotty Progress on Education Gauges

North Carolina rate a C+, and 21 out of 50 on the factors the study counted.

States ranked high are some of the high-tax states: Maryland, Massachusetts and New York. But a surprise to me is Arkansas at #5.

I think they were only rating the grades K-12 with things like graduation rates. So North Carolina's strength at the college level wasn't considered.

Don't pay any attention to rankings, but I teach near a military base. We have lots of turnover, year round. I have never, in six years, had a kid come into my class that was anywhere near where we are in regards to math. Never. I know I have had them from NY, VA, MD, CA, AZ, KY, and several others. Frequently, the "he or she was in special programs at our previous school" is just in the pack here.

Not saying we are the best, we have lots of flaws, but personnel experience indicates at the middle school level at least, we are pretty respectable.

NC has an excellent community college system. The public school system in the larger cities are decent, but lacking in more rural areas. Not sure of how NC ranks, but I'm sure they are probably in the bottom half with most of the South.

NC ranks 49th in spending for education. Teachers have not received a raise in 6 years. And if the current budget passes the General Assembly, then it is very likely that MS will surpass us, and we will rank 50th.
