I see the similarities. As they've been described Austin is an educated, liberal pool of blue surrounded by an ocean of red just as Raleigh,Durham,ChapelHill is.. but is Austin more buffered against it's surrounding ocean of red?
Not so much. But in both DFW and Houston Obama won the majority of votes. Exurbia and rural areas ...not so much.

What's funny is as much as people think the entire west coast is liberal ("left coast") it's kind of the same way. E.g. Portland the city is liberal, suburbs are mixed, rural Oregon and Wash state nearby are conservative.

Conservatives in Washington represent a small populace. The Puget Sound region is much more populated than the rural conservative areas of Washington state which is primarily eastern Washington. Also, conservative in Washington is nothing like conservative in the south.

Conservatives are similar across the country. In some ways, the western conservatives are even more conservative. Just look at all those crazy ranchers and their conspiracy theories. What about the large number of rural or small town mormons prevalent in the NW as well? The differences in their influence of states is dependent on how many conservatives there are in the state.

no, it won't have any effect. Except on those people who choose to invest their emotions and intellectual capital on the musings of folks interested in controversy, especially from afar.
The idea that high-tech employers are going to leave the state is simply ridiculous, and shows just about zero understanding of business or of human nature. High-tech will do just fine here. For every skateboarding programmer who takes umbrage with the new politics, numerous other equally capable (and hopefully more mature) candidates are available.
"North Carolina loses 400 jobs as PayPal pulls facility."
"Becoming an employer in North Carolina, where members of our teams will not have equal rights under the law, is simply untenable," PayPal CEO Dan Schulman said in a statement. "The new law perpetuates discrimination and it violates the values and principles that are at the core of PayPal's mission and culture."
Hmmm, wonder if he's a "skateboarding programmer", Hamish.
