Sanderson Farms is considering Cumberland County for a chicken-processing plant that would employ 1,100 workers.
The Mississippi-based company abandoned plans for a similar project in Nash County in 2012 after the city of Wilson and some residents filed lawsuits citing environmental concerns.
Several Cumberland County landowners say they have been contacted this summer by Sanderson Farms, which would need to buy about 600 acres for spray fields beyond the industrial site to dispose of waste water that would be treated at the poultry plant.
The elected officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because a deal has not been finalized and the company was still evaluating its options.
It's common for new industries to want to keep their prospective plans secret for competitive reasons, although the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners would have to vote openly to sell the land to the company.
Cumberland County seems like a questionable place for Sanderson....its a fairly urban county.
Seems Sanderson is looking for something along I-95. You have to wonder whether Robeson County wouldn't be a better spot, particularly, southern Robeson near where I-74 and I-95 intersect. That area has really high unemployment and plenty of land.
Cumberland is not a "fairly urban county." Go "east of the river" and it's ALL rural. BTW...that's half of the county!
Cumberland and Mecklenburg were the only counties in the State listed as "urban" by the NC Dept of Commerce for a long time...not sure if any have been added. But it made them ineligible to receive certain rural grants.
