Looks like the word about obesity and smoking did not reach rural NC and a lot of other rural areas in the SE based on my observations.

Far different from the NE or the West Coast (have lived in both places).

What gives?

We have noticed that, too. Not only the number of obese folk, but the sizes are like nothing we've ever seen.

And yeah, there do seem to be a lot more smokers, but I shouldn't be one to talk about that, as I only quit 242 days, 5 hours and 54 minutes ago.

OP, do you realize how important tobacco was in the development of many areas of NC?

Overall, obesity rates in NC are similar to the northeast and much of the west coast (though higher than CA).
Obesity Prevalence Maps 2013 - DNPAO - CDC

In general, poorer areas, which often means rural, have higher obesity rates - not just in NC.

Hmmm, I think maybe that last sentence hits the nail on its head. Good point.

Though I DON'T really perceive my area in NC to be on the poor side.

This thread reminds me of a former co-worker who only saw Camaros when she was in the South but never seemed to notice them when she was in California. I had a fun time pointing them out to her whenever I was on a business trip there.

29% of NC adolescents are obese or overweight. Hard not to notice that.

Whats your point? Mine is that obesity rates in NC are equal to or lower than many NE or Western states, as demonstrated in the chart posted above.

An obvious point to this pointless thread is: TOO many are Obese, period.
