I am a retired US citizen with permanent residency and work permission (ie a "resident alien") in Denmark. My wife and I are looking into buying some residential property in NC where we can come periodically to avoid the bad Danish weather. Both of us wish to remain Danish residents.

NC income tax returns start with your federal taxable income, so I think the answer to your question probably depends on your tax status with the IRS. I'd look at
Internal Revenue Service (I think Publication 54 deals with overseas residents). The NC tax site is:

I don't have personal experience living overseas, but my understanding from a lot of friends and relatives who have is that you need to spend 330 days of the year outside the US to escape the long arm of the IRS. I've also heard that the situation is so complicated that you probably need to hire a pro to help you out.
