I don't think Lake Hickory has much if any walkable shoreline. I don't think of it as particularly swim-friendly. It's my impression that most of the better areas of the lake are taken up by private developments.
OP didn't say the airport has to be CLT... a "larger airport (like CLT)." RDU would certainly meet that criteria, and possibly even GSO.
To the OP, keep in mind that most of the lakes in western NC are in the mountains and the water will be cooler.
You might look at Smith Mtn. Lake in Virginia, though I don't know how swim-friendly it is.

Just my opinion, but in case of a medical emergency at Lake Lure, you have to choose between Asheville & Shelby for a transfer after getting to a Rutherford County facility. Shelby can then transfer a patient to CMC Main. That's why I didn't suggest Lake Lure to live on.
