We spent 10 days in WNC renting an adorable cabin in Hendersonville. We fell in love with this area and have decided we want to retire here (WNC). We did a lot of driving around, Brevard, Hendersonville and Asheville. We also spent a lot of time hiking which is our passion.

We liked the funkiness of Asheville, but it's definitely too crowded for us. We thought Brevard was quaint and loved hiking in Pisgah, but I don't believe there is a good hospital in town - could be wrong. We love Hendersonville's downtown area but the traffic around the outskirts is pretty crazy, although this is a strong possibility. We never made it to Waynesville (sorry MotorDave ), so this may still be an option. On one of our many hikes we ran into a family from Sylva who said they really loved that area so something we need to do further research on.

Can anyone comment on Sylva - how's the downtown area, how close is a really good hospital, how does the weather compare to Hendersonville? Waynesville may still be an option, so any additional information would be great.

One other thing, we're not interested in living in a subdivision - been there done that ; we'd prefer something in the woods, and would love to have mountain views. We don't need anything big, a 2 bedroom would suffice and we don't want to have to put any money into renovations. Our budget is < $300,000.

Thank you!
Joann

I love Sylva. Cool downtown, opportunities at WCU for some extra cultural stuff. Local hospital is probably OK, but Asheville is where you would go for anything serious. Not living in a subdivision will not be an issue.

Good luck.

Several existing threads on the western NC board that you can find by searching:

Personally, I'd pick Brevard, Waynesville or Hendersonville over Sylva.

1. You probably should have posted this in the "WNC" part of the forum. You might have got more replies.

2. If you like (really good) hospitals so much, then live in Asheville. Thats all there is to it. Mission hospital in Sylva is OK but its nothing like the one in Asheville. They would fly you/transport you from Sylva to Asheville for anything serious. Same goes for anywhere else in WNC. Franklin basically has an emergency room type place and they routinely use the helicopter. That being said, I know Sylva and Franklin have little medical parks where they have lots of doctors for various practices.

3. What you are asking for as far as living situation will need to be a compromise. Dont chain yourself down on account of Ashevilles hospital. Sylva is next to WCU and will have a large amount of college students and blue collar workers. Its not really known as a quiet "retirement" town, Franklin is and has more of the infrastructure (medical) needed to support people in retirement age. Also, in Franklin you could buy a very nice house for under 300K. The only real caveat is the fact that you'll wait for months to be seen as a new patient pretty much anywhere in Franklin. Took 40 days to be seen by a dermatologist as a new patient, by that time I had dealt with the issue on my own and canceled.
