The Winston-Salem Journal ran an in-depth series on this issue in late 2002 titled "Against Their Will." There is a paperback of the same title. For more than a decade the paper, along with Rep. Larry Womble and others, has tirelessly fought to see that still-living victims receive compensation from the State of NC. I believe that NC was the first state to publicly acknowledge its culpability and publicly apologize to the victims. To his credit, US Sen. Thom Tillis, when he was speaker of the NC House, was the most powerful champion of the compensation bill in the NC legislature, when no one else in leadership would touch it. It's a disgraceful chapter in NC's history, and unfortunately, many other states also ran forced sterilzation programs. However, NC was one of the worst offenders.
