Actually, I suspect that the Hispanic grocery store was the nail in the coffin. There was another Hispanic store in the building before this one. This one is bringing in more non-Hispanics.
Hispanic grocers specialize in Hispanic grocery items. BI-LO stores I have seen have either one fourth or one half of an aisle for Hispanic grocery items.

Both Hispanic stores in that building have had multi-ethnic aisles as well as standard American products. This one definitely has the superior produce department. Both did in-store bakeries. This one has an in-store cafeteria & sublets areas to other retailers who sell phones & clothing.

This store has more Mexican than the previous Hispanic grocery store. There's shelf space for several Caribbean ethnicities & a small amount of shelf space for Asian ethnicities. The previous store had more Asian products.
So how many BI-LO stores will remain in Gaston County? What about the store that had the highly publicized renovation about a year or so ago? Will that location remain open?

The million dollar renovation was the New Hope store.
