It just saddens me to see so many people willing to drop everything to move here for these reasons. Then, when this place turns into the next Phoenix, which it will... what's everyone to do? .....

So why did you move here?

My mother needs to use oxygen from time to time and she couldn't take that on a plae with her, and a 700 mile roadtrip would just be out of the question. They don't know it yet, but I plan on buying a very large house when we move back with a 1st floor master and inviting them to live with us. Is that what your parents are doing? Living with you? If so, how is that arrangement?
Thanks i'minformed...I do feel very lucky. Regarding the heat and humidity....my father has RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) so for him the heat is a blessing...my mother on the other hand grew up in the midwest so she is somewhat use to it. The trip back (From CA to SC) was not an easy one (planes were not an option). Since I was the one doing all the driving I took my time and I think we managed to stop at every reststop along the way (older folk and young children have a lot in common ) We had it all planned out to have my parents move in with us....once we arrived back here they did live with us for about a month...but then my Dad started chomping at the bit to get their own place (which they ended up doing). It's been a little over a year now and they are about 10-15 minutes away from us (which turns out to be about the same distance they were from us in CA).

I do hope your plans work out for you and your family as well. Good Luck to you!

Thank you. Actually, my mother inlaw also has RA and is now a "snowbird" spending winter in S. Florida and Summer in Rochester. She's gotten to the point where if it's winter in FLA or Sumer in NY and the temperature goes below 80, it's "chilly" and, honest to god, she will turn the heat on when it's 75 degrees.

I think there are some unavoidable evils with being middle-class in America. We can't afford where the rich live and don't want to live where the poor live, so we try to find a place to live a decent life. Word gets out and people move there. Anyway, I personally feel there is more of a decline to our culture by raising tons of children stuck in daycare all day and only getting to spend a couple hours at night or weekends with their parents because they are so overworked trying to make a living in these crazy over priced areas. I worked at a daycare where 2 year old kids were dropped off 7 AM and picked up at 6 PM every day. I know most young kids are in bed by 8PM. I am currently in that position and it is killing me only spending 2-3 hours a night with my baby. I want to change my situation, but I also don't feel at fault for causing more growth in an area because I am trying to live in a place where I can actually raise my child and be home. I come from generations of Americans and if I were allowed into another country as easily as we make it here, maybe I would try moving to Canada, Ireland, or Australia! Instead, I am giving NC a whirl and trying to remain positive that I am making the right decision. I do believe growth needs to be addressed and handled, but I am not an urban planner and I really don't have the answers.

Well basically what I was gripping about was getting a hamburger that is a cheeseburger loaded down with ketcup and mustard. They don't understand the meaning of the word "plain" at least where I am from they don't. I can't count the number of cheeseburgers that I have gotten that were far from plain. I don't eat cheese, use ketcup, mustard or mayo at all. As for the kiddie stuff, be prepared to rake off onions if your kids doesn't like them. In the children's food that has been the biggest complaint I have. That and sitting behind the car in front of me that is loaded down with teenagers talking about boyfriends and the like to the drive in attendant for several minutes while me and the 4 cars behind me sit and wither in 100 degree weather. I finally got so upset one day I parked and went in and told the manager that I was close enough to the car in front of me to hear the vast majority of what they were talking about and it didn't include anything that had to do with what they were paying her for. They have 16 more hours a day to gossip. Don't do it when I am just trying to feed a bunch of McDonald's kids.

Absolutely correct. Like I said....not easy handling a 3 year old that doesn't understand the term 'stay still'.

That happened with my cousins, bit by bit almost all of their branch of the family has come down. Only 1 moved back to NJ- she ios a widow, back to be near grandchildren - their dad is a cop & can't transfer his job.

It really doesn't matter what everyone else is doing, you have to see waht your family will do. Of couse it makes more sense to expect family members to move AFTER they have seen the place! It isn't Nirvana, maybe a few months or years have to pass before people decide to move or not.
