I really like Wilmington. I like being near the ocean and being abe to sit outside on the intercoastal while I dine. I like that it is pretty laid back and that you can go boating at anytime or take a walk on the beach. I like that the beaches do not have gigantic hotels (some of them but not where you can't see the beach, i.e. S. Florida). It is not too far from Raleigh and is a completely different feel than Raleigh and Charlotte. I would have moved there years ago, but a job was hard to find and commuting is not easy either by airport. You always have to make a connection.
For living purposes I like Charlotte, but for weekend trips I love Wilmington on the coast and Brevard in the mountains. Sorry, I couldn't just pick one....that's what makes NC the best state in all of America!
Being relatively new transplants, I don't think we've seen enough of the state to offer a comprehensive opinion. But we also liked aspects of Wilmington, and the Asheville area.
Hard to pick a specific town for me, I love the whole state. But I will say that my favorite area that I must get back to more than once a year and would live there if I could ever afford it is the mountains.
I like a hotel in Wilmington, it's a really beautiful hotel.
