Hi!
My family of four is planning to move south this June. We have a teenager and a toddler (quite a spread in age!) My husband is a welder, and I am a stay-at-home mother (a former teacher.) Though we love Boston, we can't stand these winters and the cost of living is just to high for us. Could anyone recommend an area to focus on in NC that is affordable, family-friendly, and has a good a school system? I'm sure that is what most people are looking for. One difference with us is, that since I am not bringing in an income right now, we have only been approved for up to $110K for a home. I am assuming that will narrow down our options.

PS- Being within an hour of a beach would be ideal!

For that you're looking at the counties surrounding Wilmington or up south of the VA line in NE NC. Not sure what the economy is like up there. That also limits schools, too. 110 might get you something out in one of the counties a good bit.

I do not know anything about the Wilmington area. I will begin researching and I thank you for taking the time to write back. Happy Holidays!

It's a beachy town.

NE NC might be an option. Hubby could work in tidewater if need be. No idea of the schools there though. Look for Currituck, etc.

Wilmington itself is one of the more expensive areas of the state to live in, plus schools are hit and miss. I think you should consider the Crystal Coast area and its outer reaches, like New Bern or even Winterville. Just know, in your price range you will be looking to live more rural wherever you go in the state. Best of luck!

Don't go to Kinston with a teen, there are a lot of gangs there. Also stay away from Goldsboro, Rocky Mount and Tarboro for the same reason.

I think you would love living in Union County. It's just a short drive to Charlotte, and only a couple hours drive to the beaches or mountains. Charlotte has just about everything you could ever want and has NFL Football, NBA Basketball, NASCAR racing, great shopping and is only about 20 minutes away. Union County is the fastest growing county in NC, and still has a lot of wide open spaces and many new neighborhoods with large lot sizes. Many of it's residents are people like yourself who are new to the area. Jobs are still good in the Charlotte area, and home prices are still appreciating there, unlike most of the nation. It's a great place to live!

Wink Morehead City NC, Crystal Coast, Beaches

Morehead City is a great Family-friendly town. The schools are good, the people are friendly and the beaches are clean & amazing. The fishing is real good. This part of NC runs east & west so the sun shines on it all day long. Moving to Carteret County you'll hardly know it is winter. The Winters are very mild, here it was 65 degrees today January 5, 2009. This is truly a great area to raise a family. The cost of living is low, taxes are some of the lowest in North Carolina. Morehead City offers many different subdivisions and the entire area stretches for 30+ miles to the east & same to the west, it includes several surrounding towns, so be sure to be specific about what kind of home you are looking for. I have lived here for over 30 years and really love the area. It's Paradise. see www.sunnync.org
