I really like this one, and I had a heck of a time finding some good topo maps online that didn't require some kind of fee.
Here, for NC just click on your county and it gets very specific for the area, which is phenomnal for househunters, traffic jams, etc. I really enjoyed this one, and I hope you do, too.

Tried to view aerial photos and it's brining me to a page that requires a cost to be a member. But thanks. I'm sure it's a really helpful site.

Those types of maps could be very useful for those looking to find out whether a neighborhood you're looking at is near a stream that could flood the next time an Alberto-like event comes through!! LOL

To all out there. If you haven't tried it yet, download Google Earth. Great viewing tool and has a free download.

The Wake county GIS site has great information about every property in the county. You will find aerials complete with the property boundary. It will also allow you to view a topo map for the property.

Many counties now have free GIS sites as they are considered public information. Some are more developed than others. Usually there is link from the county's web page.

Google Earth is good for various puposes. But if you want the actual land info (elevation, streams, ponds, etc) the topographic maps are more reliable.

Google Earth is great but it's also a few years outdated. It doesn't display the pics based on the way the areas look today.

What? Topographical maps do! Tell me, how often are the maps updated?

To all who cared to comment on or critizie what I wrote about Google Earth.
READ my comment. I said it was a "GREAT VIEWING TOOL" nothing more.
Jeez!

Also, if you used Google Earth at all you would know the elevation and
longitude / latitude of any given place at the point of your mouse. Do that
with a "topo". By-the-way, I checked-out that "Topozone" website. I thought
it sucked. Of course, the Google photos are not up to date. Anybody can see that. The area of interest to me just had a photo update that I know is at least two years old. The fact is, you can get a better overview of the entire area with Google Earth (especially with newer photos) than you ever can with a "topo". As far as I am concerned, everytime I've looked at Google Earth, the mountains, lakes, rivers. cities and oceans haven't moved.
Try it the next time you want to buy some property. With the newer photos I can just about count the individual trees on my properties. Since it has been offered on the internet, it has helped me many times in my purchases and also prevented me from making some blunders. Remember, this is a
"VIEWING TOOL" nothing more. Do I need to repeat myself mmdj43?

You didn't have to respond with such a nasty attitude. I was merely making a comment based on what I was told from someone else that referred me to the site. And yes, I am well aware that the lakes, rivers, etc. have not moved, I was really referring to specific home addresses. Perhaps next time you should be a bit more friendly and realize that this forum is for informational purposes not babbling nasty comments.
