We're moving to Cary at the end of next month. We have two cars and I was wondering if I could put one of them in my 19 year old's name. We're moving from NY and my son doesn't have his license yet; just a NY permit. So he'll have to apply for a NC permit when we move. We have four sons and will be applying for SSI on account of our youngest son who is disabled. We'll be disqualified since we have two cars so that's why I want to put one in our oldest son's name. He'll still be living with us and attending Wake Technical Community College when we move. So, anyway, I know he's technically old enough for a car to be resistered in his name but want to know if this is still possible if he's living with us and doesn't have his license yet. Thanks for any advice.

NCDOT Division of Motor Vehicles: How do I title & register a vehicle?

You don't need a drivers license to title a car.

I don't understand. Having two cars automatically disqualifies you SSI?

If he is 19, can't he just take the road test and written test to be licensed?

Didn't know you had to do the permit thing after age 18...

I think so. I'll check that again. Maybe I'm wrong.

Here in NY you need a permit to learn how to drive a car. Once you're comfortable enough, then you take the road test. I got my own permit when I was 19 and took the road test a few months later. Does it work differently in NC? How would you skip the permit step and still be able to learn and take the road test? Oh wait, I think I remember my real estate agent telling me that the high schools teach drivers ed as part of the regular curriculum so I guess that's how. Here in NY driver's ed isn't part of the regular curriculum in HS.

Thank you. I'll read through this information.

You may not be able to insure both cars on the same policy if you title one in your son's name. That may have an impact on your insurance costs - something you should discuss with your auto insurance agent.

Beyond that ... I don't know anything about SSI, but if the rules say two cars disqualifies you, then I don't believe playing a shell game with car titles is the right way to go about this.

Driver ed is in the high school. I heard it is like a week or less?

In my previous life in another state you were allowed to do a road test / written test (pass both) and get a license if you were over 18 without a permit or driver ed classes.

Might call NC DMV to see what is needed for a 19 year old to get licensed?

Yes, I do realize I'll have to insure the car in my son's name and that'll impact insurance costs. As far as SSI goes, I need to have two cars so this is what I'll have to do.
