I am looking to visit ND to look for a job. Unlike many, I'm not a golddigger looking to make the big bucks, but am lookiing for a job market where the employers don't look at the felonies on my record - put there by someone else - and tell me to go clean-up my record before applying. That's not possible to do, unfortunately.

I want to know where it is best to land and rent a car and see the state. Bismark, Fargo, Minneapolis?

I plan to visit each town like Fargo, Bismark, and, of course, Williston and towns in Montana to see what they look like. It might even be appropriate to see places in Canada, but I don't know. For the smaller places, I want to get out of my car and walk around.

I just want to spend a couple weeks staying in a new town every night and asking questions locally.

It's too bad that in Sep it is likely to be nice weather since I like the cold and the snow.

I have a BS in electrical engineering and one in accounting. There has got to be something to do there. Wal-Mart and McDonalds just laugh in my face. Before my ID was hijacked, headhunters used to beg me to interview with their clients.

I'm not broke since I saved my money when times were good and didn't buy "stuff" that wasn't important. I can afford important stuff like rental cars, hotels, food, ...

You won't be looking at anything in Canada with felonies on your record. They won't even let you in if you've had a DUI.

Your identity was stolen but there is no way to get these charges off your record?

Not according to both the district attorney and the city police. They "need" to know my name in case the perp ( currently in jail ) uses my name as an AKA again. Anyone with a random curiosity about my name can look me up on the city metro court web site and see all the offenses "I've" committed.

The DA person I talked to said "anyone can see you weren't convicted." Maybe if you are a DA, you can. When I asked for a letter from them stating that I was innocent, she didn't understand the question.

The police detective handling my case said "all you have to do is explain that you are not really the person who committed the crime(s). Right. When there are 100 other people applying for the same job, no one is willing to look at a candidate with defects.

Note that the DA and police have really great pensions so real-world job-seeker problems don't register.

I had to pay $1,250 to get fingerprints or go to jail. This is life in the US today - and I guess Canada as you stated.

There is no way to fix this. It's not like some "easy" problem like the thousands of dollars stolen in my name. This is criminal and I'm not really a person.

Ultimately, there is the Colt .45 job application process I can use. One hollow-point fluid-expanding round in the chamber, barrel in the mouth, suffering ends ...

Fargo has the most flight options....United has daily flights from ORD (and Denver?).....American from DFW.....Delta from MSP.....and Allegiant from a variety of other places. Bismark too has flights from Denver and MSP and Allegian Flights. I have always found the airfare into Fargo to be reasonable.

I am sorry for your situation. But it seems you have folks who know your case who can back you up in what happened to you. Perhaps you could personally go to several places of interest and explain your situation and they could contact the DA and attorney to understand what you see when you pull up a computer record on your name is not really the case.

Certainly not a time to apply via on-line. I have experience in your situation and I have never worked for a hiring company but that would be my advice.

I do know construction is strong state-wide and always willing to hire hard working good people....same goes for almost any trade (A/C and furnace repair, plumber, electrician, etc.....) A national company may be harder as they often have strict rules, etc versus say a mom and pop place. I dont know if this is helpful but good luck.

How are the facilities, weather, etc?

I assumed that Fargo would have more flight options. That might ultimately be the driver.

Rental car options might push me even closer to Fargo. Sure, with the boom, you can fly to Williston, but would someone checking out the region as a whole want to?

I agree. That's why I'm looking in ND. I assume that if I can walk in the door and prove I can spell the word "engineer" I can get someone to talk to me.

If they don't have a position, they might know someone who might.

Being an IT person, Excel expert, pretty good in tax, auditing, it would probably not be advisable to look at being a drilling rig operator or a pipefitter, etc. Now, a drilling rig supply chain specialist or a piping capacity analyst? That might be something.

For future posts to this thread, I'd like to avoid advice on ID Theft since that isn't the topic. It isn't even anything to do with ND. It is just something to give as a reason for looking there instead of in Dallas or Chicago, et al.

Of course, I welcome DMs from those with advice or if you just want to call me a liar.

Fargo and the entire Fargo-Moorhead[-West Fargo metro is close to 200k. Fargo city proper is nr 100k. I have flown in and out of Fargo several times mainly for the United to ORD flight due to family living in that part of the region. Fargo's airport is largest in the state (but certainly no MSP or anything close to that) and there are several rental car companies (the typical ones such as AVIS, Budget, etc) in the area where you get your luggage on the first floor. It is a pretty laid back airport and easy to get out of/into I think.

I would suggest starting your search in Fargo area....Bismarck too as both continue to grow....Grand Forks as well.... check job service of ND home page for listings as many companies post there....or do a search for certain companies that may have jobs you are interested in and then contact them and explain your situation.

Fargo overall has always had the cheapest rental/home/gas prices in the area being its larger and has more competition.

Weather in September into mid October is usually pretty nice... It will be quite warm still in early September 70s and 80s....but start cooling down nicely by mid to late September in most years with risk of some frost toward late month or early October. Main snow threat doesnt really start til after Halloween.

Most areas of ND have worker shortages in certain fields....medical one for sure. Fargo does have a microsoft campus as well.

Good luck
Dan

Thank you again for your well-organized and thoughtful posts.

My question about weather was not how is it in some period, but rather, how are the airports effected by weather? For instance, perhaps Bismark has more reliable service because the wind or snow doesn't hit them as much.

For someone from, say Indiana, one town is like another weather-wise, but in the west, the difference in distance between Indianapolis and Cinncinnati could mean the difference between rain and snow or punishing winds and a breeze.

It might end up being smartest to just look at temp jobs in Fargo for a while. It wouldn't have the six-figure jobs of legend, but would be a stepping-stone to knowledge of the state - which is more valuable.

Sorry... I am a meteorologist at NWS Grand Forks, so weather is on my mind and I do aviation forecasts too. But there is really no day to day difference between say Bismarck and Fargo one storm can hit Fargo and not Bismarck and vice versa....But in general Fargo airport rarely closes....the biggest issue is usually the hub you are flying into our out of due to weather and if you leave late or arrive late (for example MSP). If weather is bad in Fargo and good in MSP you generally will leave ok....but if it is bad in MSP then they may be in a control slowdown program (or whatever they call it) and set up to only accept certain number of planes to land at a time.

But overall Sept into Oct are good flying months. Can have some patchy ground fog early in the morning but sunshine outweighs any clouds and storms by a long shot. Now Dec-Jan clouds are the rule.

I decided to fly into Bismarck. I couldn't find a non-stop into Fargo, so what the heck? I'll Fly a Canadair Regional jet out of Denver either way. I'm flying in Sat 21 and departing Sat 28. I'll come with money and stay in local hotels if possible.

I'm going to look around, ask questions, try to eat at local restaurants, visit a few employment agencies and .... did I say ask questions?

I'll stay in Bismarck, Minot, Williston and probably one night in Eastern MT. When I stay, I'll walk the streets and see what stuff looks like.

I realize that this time of year, the weather is ideal, but I know what blizzards are like and have seen -21 deg before. I've seen more than a couple weeks in a row where temps didn't go above zero.

I see a lot on this ND forum about people looking for stuff like rig workers and cashiers, but not so much about engineers. It might be that they aren't needed so much.

Again, I'll just ask around.

When you start looking for jobs, you can start early at Job Service North Dakota and see what is available. There are a lot of job openings that I read in the paper daily. September is very nice weather, cool in the evening and warm during the day. some places, the leaves have already started falling.
