Hello all,

My father works for the B.I.A. (Bureau of Indian Affairs) and we all have to be transferred to Devil's Lake, North Dakota. Unfortunately, due to our circumstances, we might have to take government housing, which scares me some. I have two sisters (one is 22-years-old, the other is 10-years-old) and a 15-year-old brother, I am really worried for their safety. I have looked online, and I am conflicted in what to believe is accurate. I heard it may be dangerous for kids? That has really brought up my anxiety and I can hardly think about anything else. I also fear for my father's safety. Past experiences to places like this has been really hard on us, and I'm just really afraid.

How safe is Devil's Lake? Should I really be so fearful over their safety? Is it really rough and dangerous like I think it is? How high is the crime level there? What are the government housing areas like in the area?

Any information would be wonderful help. Thank you.

I live/work in the Grand Forks area to the east... but drive through Devils Lake a lot on the way to Minot and have stopped numerous times and also lived in the area since 1998 so know pretty well the news of the region.

Now, in regards to the government housing is that going to be on the reservation (Spirit Lake). Devils Lake city itself is not on the reservation.

Devils Lake city itself is a fine town/city....since they have expanded flood protection it is growing again and getting a new SuperWalmart and an Applebees is opening up. Devils Lake is a fishing haven and is an attraction yearround for sports enthusiasts. For safety concerns I wouldnt have any for Devils Lake city.

Now I havent been on the Spirit Lake reservation. There is a large casino there. In the news the various reservation lands in ND and the BIA does get some bad press, and unfortunately the reservations certainly do have higher crime/poverty than non-reservation areas in the state. I wouldnt call it dangerous though, there are way more good people than bad, but yes there have been issues. Lately issues in regards to child abuse, neglect. Violent crime is pretty rare though. There are many worse reservations for sure in the U.S. than Spirit Lake that is for sure. I'm sorry dont have any more info.

I can too, hopefully allay your fears about moving to Devils Lake, not a big deal anymore than moving to another town/region for the kids would be. I have a coworker that grew up there (Ft. Totten) and she travels there regularly. The issues she speaks of are more of a deep seated cultural & social nature rather than of a violent crime issue.

Do "bad" things happen up on the rez? Of course as with any place of population. But I would say far, far less than say what occurs on the Red Lake Reservation over in MN.. As Dan said, most issues we in ND note are the issues stemming from neglect, abuse and addiction related illnesses.

If I were to have been asked to move my family there 5 yrs ago when my daughters were in HS and I still had my boat, I would have jumped at the chance. It is a sportsman's mecca, world class hunting and fishing. The region makes alot of $$$ because of that fact and makes it safe to ensure future visitors and citizens.

My opinion is based on growing up near several reservations in NW MN, living in major metro areas in MI, MN & IL for the past 25 yrs and being blessed to be able to move back to Dakota to raise my family. Devils Lake is a thriving, mellow, diverse and safe community..

Now the bigger concern would be can you handle the cold...... Lol..

Good info Rod....I would concur based on what I know about the area and following news closely. Not so much a violent crime issue but more social issues. Devils Lake itself is on the north side of the lake and the reservation on the south side. Devils Lake proper is growing finally again after securing more funds to secure flood control for the city and at least a bit more stable lake level. But the future is bright there due to tourism.
