Dr. Atul Gawande went to check out the tussle in Minot, in Ward County, with the coronavirus, both sides of the argument, and then wrote about the divide.

Inside the Worst-Hit County in the Worst-Hit State in the Worst-Hit Country
I wanted to learn about Minot because it was exceptional: it was in the worst-performing county in the worst-performing state in the worst-performing country in the world. But I also wanted to learn about it because it didn’t seem unusual at all: the city was divided over what to do about the pandemic, and even what to think about it.

Worldometer shows that North Dakota ranks thirteenth among the states in Covid deaths per capita, and that thirteen European countries have had more deaths per capita than the US.

As of today, ND ranks 12th and SD 9th in death rate. This is not good, considering that rural states generally fared better than urban states just because of population density. For comparison, nearby states with more aggressive public health mitigation like WI and MN rank 36 and 37th in the nation. South Dakota has had double the death rate of Minnesota and Wisconsin so far. If the vaccination rates continue to be low in ND and SD, it's only going to get worse. The unvaccinated will get Covid eventually.

In talking to my neighbors why they won’t get the vax, it’s what they hear on the internet, Facebook and YouTube. So if the government wants to get people vaccinated, they need to deal with what these anti vaxxers are putting out on social media. Because that’s what the vax hesitating people are believing rather than what the government it telling them. Good Luck.

If you've had the virus, you dont need a vaccine for it. If you're young, healthy, and havent had the virus, you still dont need the vaccine. Only the old and most vulnerable need the vaccine. Natural immunity will last longer than the vaccine.

You can always find, in any situation, somebody or some place, worse off, or dumber, or more backward, or suffering more - but that's not supposed to function as consolation.

The point in taking a vaccine is not just to keep yourself from getting covid. Its to stop circulation of the disease within the community to vulnerable people. The elderly may die from covid. Many people may become "long haulers" and not fully recover. Some will recover, but require expensive hospitalizations. I have friends who have never recovered their full sense of smell and taste.

As long as it just becomes a "ME, ME, ME" thing we never entirely understand the truth about vaccination and dangerous infectious diseases. I take the vaccine to protect you and your family. You take it to protect me and my family. Please don't accuse me of being a "socialist". Its just being prudent.

The vaccinated can become "long haulers" if the virus breaks through giving them a mild case, if the they never achieved immunity, or if their immunity runs out.

Its true there are a few break through cases, but the odds of getting covid after being fully vaccinated are less than 10% of what they are in you haven't had a vaccine.

I think Burleigh and Morton Counties were in worse shape than Ward overall with regards to covid. Grand Forks had lots of cases but mostly people in 20s getting. Cass wave in the fall was decently smaller than elsewhere, but they had larger wave in spring 2020 too.
