My vote is for the Red Barons. This is an opportunity for the team to go to a local name and re-establish the team as a local team. I think going back to the Red Barons, a local name incorporating both Scranton and Wilkes-Barre's minor league baseball history, is the best bet. The new uniforms can use the Yankees blue with the maroon of the original Red Barons uniforms, bringing back the SWB logo for the hats.

Here's the link for the contest:

Thank god they came to their senses and are canning the Yankees name... I really have not gone to a game that i paid $ for a ticket since the Phillies left because I hate NY teams. I know they will still be controlled by the Yankees but Maybe with a different name i will feel a little better going to a game and rooting for them. I love the old Red Barons name or perhaps Miners or Coal Barons...

edit: Cool. after submitting it said come back July 16th to vote on finalists names

Not that I really care much but I thought the suggestions of Breakers or Breaker Boys had some merit. It is tied to the area, not any major league team, and unique.

It would make for an opportunity to tie the story of why the name was selected to the area and some of the 'touristy' stuff.

I wonder if the Iron Pigs/Phillies still own the Red Barons name.

The first thing they should do is drop the "Scranton/Wilkes Barre" it just doesnt sound right.

I think Breakers is a good choice for a name.

No, the SWB Yankees own the Red Barons name/logos, it was sold along with the team from the county stadium authority to SWB Yankees. If you go to the web and type in redbarons.com, it redirects you to swbyankees.com.

I did hear that they do not plan on bringing back the Red Barons name. I personally think they should avoid any coal references, that's been overdone in this area, and I think we're trying to shed the old coal town image. Someone wrote to the Scranton Times the other day suggesting the name SWB Zombies. I like that, something different that will get people's attention, kind of like Iron Pigs. It would make for some cool merchandise.
