For nearly the past 6 months, I have only seen positions offered for upper management. Seriously, how does one get into that company? I've been here 6 years and I haven't met one person who works there! I once worked as a temp for their parent company (Plantronics) in Santa Cruz, CA, then found a regular job a block away. This area...including the Hudson Valley is extremely difficult to find work.

I think it depends on your qualifications with someone like them. Satellite/electronics type jobs around here are very specific and I know they get a bit stickler with hiring. Is that the type of work you do?

Mostly clerical: Document Control (within engineering departments), Purchasing and Payroll. Right now, I'd be happy with just general office and there isn't anything to be found. They all want people to be "proficient" in Microsoft Office or "proficient" in just Word and Excel. NOBODY is proficient in those. I don't know about Powerpoint...haven't needed to use it. I resent those tests that the temp agencies pressure you to take if you want to sign up with them. So many of the features aren't ever used by most people...I'd be willing to bet.

I would just send a resume to the Human Resources department. That's how I got my last job. I was there 7 1/2 years. It was a health ins company in NJ.

Even if a company doesn't have a help wanted posting anywhere, you never know.

I've been told they don't accept them that way anymore. I went to the front desk once and was told that I'd have to look on-line.

Alot of places in the area will allow you to still walk in and hand them a resume. Can't hurt to try. If there's nothing in the Milford area maybe cross over to the Middletown area there's always tons to be had there and it's only 20 minutes from you

Thanks, believe me, I'm not adverse to commuting. I spent 6 years driving to and from Middletown in the last job. To me, that's not very far...only 22 miles each way. I used to commute 44 miles each way for a number of years.

The only way to get into Altec Lansing is through the careers link on the Plantronics website, or be recruited.

Be glad you don't work there, however, as the heads have been rolling due to Plantronic's mismanagement.

It is almost impossible to get a job there. Some years ago they had temps but I do not know if they do anymore. Closely knit, who you know, etc.

You'd be surprised at the amount of people who are very proficient in MS Office technology. The problem in you not seeing or meeting any is because in the type of work you describe it's not required (regardless of what the company says) and you don't really need to be a pro as they say. Most of the people you'll find that are proficient with MS Office work in law firms where they handle lot's of documents and have to be able to type pretty quick. So for those companies that stress proficiency...trust me their HR rep probably isn't proficient either!! So who are they fooling. Don't give up, be pushy, it will pay off. Also, as I recommended to another member here, you might wanna try your local Manpower office. They have a department that deals with professional positions if you're background qualifies you for that. If not, they're still a very good option and better than dealing with your local unemployment office where all the riff-raff goes.
