One of the leaders of the Buddhist group that purchased it was interviewed last night on Blue Ridge TV. He said they are still going forward with opening the retreat center. That will be good for the local economy!

Just curious, when someone says a project is "good for the local economy", how do you think this benefits the average homeowner?
I am sick to death of hearing this phrase parroted by people because they hear it on tv or read it in the Pocono Record, and who should really know by now that it's a bunch of BS.
Are you a business owner that will benefit from increased patronage to your store/restaurant/gas station or whatever?
Are you a person who is thrilled about the low paying dead end jobs these projects usually bring?
Since this is a religious retreat- no doubt they will be exempt from paying property taxes. Oh joy. Another large property not paying taxes. Just what we need. Not...
So the average homeowner will see no benefit whatsoever from yet another project that will be "good for the local economy".
In fact, our taxes will likely go up to compensate for extra traffic (road maintenance) extra litter and garbage cleanup, extra police and emergency services presence because more visitors bring more traffic and more accidents.
All I see are a bunch of tax freeloaders that the local politicians are only too happy to give sweetheart deals to, at our expense... while our taxes, go up, up, up and up some more... with no end in sight.
I would just like someone to be honest and tell me how I- as an average (retired) homeowner- benefit in any way, shape or form from any of these projects...
Burned out dead lot or Buddhists? I'll have to think about that for a while.
I know, right?
Fernwood could become the next Penn Hills, a dilapidated firetrap and graffiti magnet, or it can be refurbished and put to a good use providing construction jobs initially followed by hospitality and seasonal jobs in the future. Tough choice!

Would those be like those great jobs that sports stadiums bring- for 6 months a year? Oh goody. What a great future those employees will have...
Yeah- tough choice. I'd rather see affordable housing built on that site. There's a real need for that. Or better yet- turn it into a park. The Buddhist's won't be paying taxes anyway... so no loss.
We have more than enough "hospitality" projects in this area. 611 can't handle any more traffic and I'm not the only one sick of it all.
