A cable based funicular would be ideal in many of the steep mountains in NE PA.

With the eventual demise of the infernal combustion engine, those battery heavy EVs are not going to do well, hauling "stuff" up and down the mountains.

Perhaps they could be integrated into tourism and recreation?

There are already plenty of ski mountains with lifts for tourists to ride in the summer, for example Camelback's Camel Beach does that. Knoebels is an example of a non-ski operator that has a lift ride.

Also, not sure if people in the 21st century want to ride up and down the little hills of PA like they used to (see Mount Pisgah video below).

A small scale funicular might only be good for moving people. But a larger scale one might be useful hauling supplies, when weather extremes hit.
In the coming decades, when petroleum based vehicles are phased out, it will become obvious that the efficiency of steel wheel on steel rail will recommend such solutions.

Also, there are some scenic spots, like Prospect Rock, that could be developed into a tourist site, if there was something "extra" - like a funicular - to merit a visit. Plus it would cut down on the need for parking space.

Another possible option - suspended cable car.

Imagine a trip crossing the Susquehanna river, from mountain peak to mountain peak.
