Most of the interesting exploration sites are torn down like the Schuylkill Mall and the St. Nicholas coal breaker. You can hike in to see the entrance of the "big lick" mine drainage tunnel near Williamstown in Dauphin County (not off 61) and what remains of Centralia. Shamokin City is interesting to walk around in and there are some ruins left of the Glen Burn Colliery (if you want to hike up a huge culm bank) but the Eagle and Huwesi silk mills, the walnut hosiery mill, the Kreisl packing plant and the F&S Brewery have all been demolished.

Be careful with buildings that seem abandoned in Shamokin. You may climb through a boarded up window and find people living there. Or you may find that the building was boarded up to keep meth heads out.
