Hi Everyone,
My husband has taken a great job in Wilkes-Barre & I now need some major help.
We are from Ohio, & currently live in Kent - we own 2 houses - one is a rental. Anyways, because of our lovely housing market we know our house will not sell for awhile. So we have decided that we will rent an apartment, condo, house etc.. outside of WB. My husband will stay there almost 100% of the time; while I will be there about 50% - the other half I will have to spend back in Ohio.
I am confused on where we should look for housing outside of WB - & I would appreciate any advice given. We are looking for safety as well as decent rental prices. My husband is willing to make a 35 - 45 minute commute if need be; though the closer the better. I guess we are just looking for a safe nice place to live, we do not have children - so schools are not a main concern - & of course some great people to become friends w/. Any info on areas, apts etc.. will be greatly appreciated. Thank-You

Check out East Mountain Apartments in Plains Twp., Wilkeswood Apts., Gateway Apts.(Kingston) , Green Acres Apts (Kingston), Cedar Village Apartments, Parkway Manor Apts. (Woodtip Reality). All of these are nice, middle range apartment complexes right outside of Wilkes-Barre some of these have a pool and exercise rooms ect. Out of the ones I've mentioned, I personally would choose East Mountain or Green Acres. It's hard to give you detailed info. What price range? Are you looking for a rural, suburban, or urban area?, Do you want to rent a single house, condo, or apartment? Are you staying here long term or short term?

I did a little homework for you. Here are some apartment communities and thier tele.#'s. Wilkeswood apts. (570-822-2711), East Mountain apts (570-822-4444), Cedar Village (570-823-8400), Green Acres (570-288-9019), Mayflower Crossings (570-822-3968), Gateway apts (570-288-6300). If that's not what you're looking for the check out The Citizens Voice, and The Times Leader classifieds, anything in Kingston, Forty Fort, Plains, West Pittston, Wyoming is good. You can find apartments or single homes for about $500-$1,000+. It's really depends on what you want and what you're willing to spend.

Nice W-B, I like Mayflower crossings as I live near it and it looks like a really nice area. As you said, they can find cheaper prices if they want to rent from a homeowner for about $500 per month but if they can afford the extra $200 I think they will love Mayflower.

Mayflower crossing used to be a low income project about 4 years ago. They converted them and are having a hard sell with them.

Is that true? I know some of the Penguins Hockey players live there during hockey season. It's a hell of alot better now then it used to be! I wish they would convert the rest of the cities projects to higher end housing.

Also check this out Woodtip Reality, Parkway Manor (570-288-4200). This is a small apartment complex directly across the river from downtown Wilkes-Barre, it offers nice views of downtown, and the majestic courthouse. It's located about 200 yards from the river, very close to Nesbitt and Kirby parks and it is right below the dyke that is used as a walking, running, biking trail (it'll be practically in your back yard). This would be my first choice because of it's proximity to Kirby/Nesbitt parks, it's view of downtown, and how close it is to both downtown, and the river and its amenities (you can walk from Parkway Manor to downtown W-B in about 10-15 minutes from here).

I can't wait until they convert that old factory up there into lofts and condos. That'll really give Mayflower a fresh, new look. It's nice to see someone making such a large investment in one of the cities neighborhood's and not just downtown. What is the status of that project by the way? When will they break ground on it?
