My husband, son and I were interviewed for a series called "Faces of Autism" which is running this week in our hometown paper (The Times News, Lehighton). Thought I would share the links to the articles. Our story was run yesterday.

Here they are, in order:

Part 1 - Local families impacted by disorder that's complex, misunderstood | Times News Online (http://www.tnonline.com/node/368770 - broken link)

Part 2 Faces of autism - Part I Local families impacted by disorder that's complex, misunderstood | Times News Online (http://www.tnonline.com/node/368770 - broken link)

Part 3 Faces of autism - Part 2 Faces of autism - Part 2 | Times News Online (http://www.tnonline.com/node/369834 - broken link)

Part 4 "A race against time" "A race against time" | Times News Online (http://www.tnonline.com/node/370460 - broken link)

There's one more part today, and then the reporter (who has a column on the weekends) is devoting his column to the subject as well.

Thanks for letting me share the stories.

Cathy

Great story! Glad to see it focuses on local families. Your son is adorable Will you be at the Autism Task Force meeting at Scranton U next weekend? They can definitely use some more advocates like you!

Cathye, I commend you for a wonderful job! It is great to see the involvement and the advocacy that you strive for. You have a 212 degree attitude. At 211 degrees.......water is hot! At 212 degrees water boils. With boiling water comes steam. Steam can power a locomotive. One extra degree makes all the difference in the business and in life; it separates the good from the great!! Great Job. BTW, I used to work with young children with autism through the IU#20 and it was one of the most satisfying things I ever did. To this day I remain close to the families and admire them for the challenges that they handle on a day to day basis.

Way to go!

Default Thank you!

Thank you all for your kind words. I guess since having autism as a part of our family life, I never really seen myself as doing anything different or harder than any other family.

My life isn't all sunshine and roses; but is anyones? I do have my personal meltdowns; they usually happen on Anthony's birthday. I guess it's just a big reminder that another year has gone by that my son has been living in the autism world. There are times when I get angry, frustrated, sad - but the strides my son is making definitely outshadow all the bad stuff. And believe me, when he just spotaneously walks over and gives me a kiss on the cheek, well, you just can't have a bad day after that!!

The way I see it is this; I have never had a better teacher than my son. He has taught me to check my first impressions at the door; summon up vast amounts of patience when needed, and love fully, completely and unconditionally. I owe him so much in changing my perspective about my life and those in it.

So if by doing this I can get the word out about autism, and if one person read the article and became aware and compassionate, and not look at my son oddly or with distain, then it's well worth it.

I owe my son that...and so very much more.

Well Cathy...by your above post...you and others can see that you truly have been blessed! Your days don't compare to most parents, but you reap joys in ways other parents don't. God Bless you, your husband, and your 3 children. What a special family with very special parents!

Love this post Cathy, it really is all so true! Birthdays are absolutely one of the hardest days of the year, but it's always nice to reflect on the year's progress

One thing I love these days is really appreciating the little things that others would never even think of. Last week my son looked over at me in the kitchen and waved at me for the first time ever. Anyone else would just see a 4 year old waving. I stood there, cried, and waved back as big as I could. A small way of communicating, without prompting, that I never thought I'd see!

I hope many people see your article

Pocono, I did not forget you!! You are another one of our local heros by being a pioneer and advocate for the autism cause. As many know, Pocono started the first chapter for Wayne County and we all are proud of her. Have you planned any fundraisers or anything else coming up in the near future? Good job, pocono..............The Hat
