Why is the cancer rate so high in NEPA? That's kind of scary. Is it b/c of the old coal mines? Does anyoyone have any other answers?

There's an unusually high rate of smokers in NE PA....that's at least partially to blame.

Alot of the population of PA is older. Maybe that could have something to do with it.

A few weeks ago, I was at a seminar where the American Cancer Society was presenting. The speaker made the same comments. She stated people always say there is a high cancer rate in our area - she assured us it was because of the older population.

NEPA is home to...

...an above-average population of smokers.
...an above-average population of alcoholics.
...an above-average population of overweight individuals.
...an above-average population of senior citizens.
...an above-average concentration of industrial-era remnants (i.e. culm dumps, bore hores, mine shafts, etc.)

I'm sure some of these may be factors. The next time you see an obese elderly man with a cigarette in one hand and a bottle of Miller Lite in the other, you can thank him for being part of this statistic! LOL!
