Why is the cancer rate so high in NEPA? That's kind of scary.
Is it b/c of the old coal mines? Does anyoyone have any other answers?

Alot of the population of PA is older. Maybe that could have something to do with it.

A few weeks ago, I was at a seminar where the American Cancer Society was presenting. The speaker made the same comments. She stated people always say there is a high cancer rate in our area - she assured us it was because of the older population.

NEPA is home to...
...an above-average population of smokers.
...an above-average population of alcoholics.
...an above-average population of overweight individuals.
...an above-average population of senior citizens.
...an above-average concentration of industrial-era remnants (i.e. culm dumps, bore hores, mine shafts, etc.)
I'm sure some of these may be factors. The next time you see an obese elderly man with a cigarette in one hand and a bottle of Miller Lite in the other, you can thank him for being part of this statistic!
